Almost everyone has seen Titanic, directed by James Cameron, and many even consider it a classic. There are many factors that contribute to the huge success of this film. From the amazing actors to special effects there is no arguing that Titanic was a monumental production. The thing that truly put Titanic over the edge was the well unified plot. If uses a traditional circular story structure while using a frame plot. Titanic also has a recurring theme of breaking class stereo types along side the love story.
The first plot unification technique that Titanic uses to enhance the plot is a circular story structure. Titanic both begins and ends many years after the boat has sunk. It begins with some researchers searching the bottom of the ocean for the diamond that was on board The Titanic. The movie then follows a flashback of Rose and Jack, focusing on their short love affair while aboard the ship. After the climax of the flashback the movie returns to present time. The final scene of the movie is Rose throwing a wreath in the water to commemorate Jack's death. The story is circular because the movie both begins and ends in the present with a very large flashback in the middle.
The second plot unification technique is the use of a recurring theme. Although when most people watch Titanic they are entranced by the love story between Rose and Jack there is a deeper message to the movie. Jack, a poor, down on his luck boy, and Rose, the daughter of a very rich man, fall in love and break the stereo type that romance must occur within class barriers. There are many scenes in the movie that tie back to this main theme.
In conclusion, Titanic uses various plot unification techniques to enhance the story. It begins in the present then flashes to the past to finally end right back in the present. This gives viewers a circular story structure to draw closure from. Secondly, it has a recurring theme that focuses on breaking the stereo type of class barriers.
